The history of Cyprus 
Cyprus has a long history dating back more than 9000 years old.  Due its strategic location and that it was abundant in timber and metals; it attracted the Persians, Romans, Franks, Venetians, Ottomans and British etc to its island. However, it is the Greek culture that has survived throughout the years.
Other awesome information:
          Romans gave Cyprus as present to Cleopatra because their emperor was at the time in love with her.
          Apostles Paul and Barnabas introduced Christianity to Cyprus in 45A.D. and made it the first Christian country in the world.
          Leonardo Da Vinci visited Cyprus in 1481 and loved the traditional lace work so much that he bought a large piece of it and gave it to a Catholic Church in Milan, Italy.
 
Who runs Cyprus Today?
Cyprus is divided into two parts consisting of Greek Cypriots as well as the Turkish Cypriots.

South : The South of the island is now called Republic of Cyprus and is mostly occupied by Greeks and its citizens are called Greek Cypriots.

North : The North is called
TurkishRepublic of Northern Cyprus and is mostly occupied by Turks and its citizens are called Turkish Cypriots.
 

Capital : The centrally located capital,
Nicosia (called Lefkosia by Greek Cypriots and Lefkosha by Turkish Cypriots), is divided and functions as the capital of each side.
